Religion and wise quotes

Religion around the world has no shortage of wise quotes. Buddhism is only one of the world religions claiming to be able to reveal total truth through their wise quotes. I have been exposed to many wise quotes from a multitude of these religions and it seems like all truth is not revealed in one religion, but some truth is revealed in each. Many would like to think that each religion has an equal amount of truth and untruth that we can learn about and experience, but that seems to me to be statistically quite improbable. It seems much more likely that some religions and religious leaders have more truth in their wise quotes than others.

Unwise and wise quotes

One of the most valuable things that we can learn is how to distinguish the wise quotes from the unwise quotes. This is easier said than done though. Not only is there the trouble of distinguishing those that seem like wise quotes from those that really are, but there is also the trouble of the utter subjectivity of it all. We all have different concepts and ideas and beliefs that we view as wise or unwise, and so we all have different measurements of what are wise quotes and what are unwise quotes. So perhaps the best thing to do is to simply disagree kindly, lovingly, sympathetically, but non-judgmentally.

Wise quotes and wars

The problem with dealing with wise quotes in religion is that religion often leads to more divisiveness rather than unity. If we are not careful, even our most well intentioned wise quotes can lead to feelings of distancing and uncaring in the people we try to share our wise quotes with. The last thing that wisdom should lead to is warring. True wisdom, true wise quotes should lead to love and peace. That is what true wisdom is, ultimately. Love, peace, and togetherness.

Wise quotes summed up

Go ahead. Be wise. Use your wise quotes. Use them everyday. Use them all the time. Use them to excess. But never let your wise quotes get in the way of true wisdom, the wisdom of healed, whole relationship. Perhaps one of the wisest applications of our wise quotes would be on ourselves. It is easy to read something wise, something true, something provocative and life altering and think, "Oh, I know exactly who needs to read this, hear this, see this." But rarely do we look in the mirror for the audience that needs that truth, that reality, that wise quote. And we probably should. After all, no one wants to be getting a lecture and some free advice from someone who hasn't even learned how to live their favorite wise quotes.
